Sikorsky’s candidate features coaxial top rotors: The two large rotors on top of the helicopter, which give it lift, spin in opposite directions, negating the need for a traditional tail rotor. Now extinct, the giant beaver was once a highly successful species. Scientists have found its fossil remains at sites from Florida to Alaska and the Yukon. A super-sized version of the modern beaver in appearance, the giant beaver tipped the scales at 100 kilograms. But it had two crucial differences. The giant beaver lacked the iconic paddle-shaped tail we see on today’s modern beavers. Instead it had a long skinny tail like a muskrat....
The avatar, named Edd Hifeng, is capable of some basic conversations, but his movements are controlled by lead researcher Selmer Bringsjord and his students. Bulik and more than 100 other researchers on an international team collaborated on a genome-wide analysis of almost 17,000 patients with AN. They found that the disease has a genetic basis that shows up in genes related to the body, as well as to the mind. These patients, and the more than 55,000 “control” patients who did not have AN, were primarily of European descent. Bulik says more widespread analysis will need to be done....
