Over the past 200 years, the pH of surface ocean waters has fallen by 0.1 pH units, a 30 percent increase in the ocean’s acidity. According to NOAA, seawater turns acidic when carbon dioxide (CO2) dissolves into ocean water to form carbonic acid. This weak acid then breaks into hydrogen ions and bicarbonate ions.
