When a runner rolls their foot too far, that’s described as over-pronation. While the law has helped cut down on overt refusal of care, gaps in emergency room access persist, according to research published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Uninsured patients or those on Medicaid who come to the emergency department with pulmonary conditions like pneumonia or asthma are more likely to be transferred to another hospital than patients on private insurance, the study found. They are also more likely to be discharged directly from the emergency department than patients with private insurance....

Though not a new material by any means, graphene has yet to really come into its moment. When shopping for face masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19, you don’t need to look for bells and whistles. Masks with breathing valves, in particular, are being marketed as a better option than plain cloth coverings—but they don’t work to prevent COVID-19 transmission the same way simple masks can. “The purpose of the valve is, when you exhale, it opens up to allow for carbon dioxide and expelled air to just exit the mask,” says John O’Horo, a Mayo Clinic infectious disease doctor who heads up the institution’s Personal Protective Equipment Task Force....

On late Monday evening, the company published the first blog post explaining what caused the dramatic problem. Santosh Janardhan, VP of infrastructure at Facebook, wrote that “the root cause of this outage was a faulty configuration change,” elaborating that “configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between Facebook’s data centers” were where the issues occurred. That network traffic disruption not only halted services on Facebook-owned apps such as WhatsApp but it also “impacted many of the internal tools and systems we use in our day-to-day operations, complicating our attempts to quickly diagnose and resolve the problem,” Janardhan adds....

Two things to note: in the Express story, the drones hunting Dorner were lent by Customs and Border Patrol.
